Food Manufacturing
Managed stores that stopped the daily consumable hunt
A Lancashire food manufacturer was losing engineering hours to missing consumables and duplicated stock. A managed stores, run and replenished by Rowlec, gave the team one reliable point of supply.
What changed
Zero
Line stoppages caused by missing consumables since go live
One order
Consolidated replenishment in place of ad hoc urgent purchases
Fewer lines
Duplicate and obsolete stock removed by rationalisation
We keep our customers anonymous, so sites are described by sector and region rather than by name. Every figure and outcome on this page is as reported to us by the customer, not measured independently by Rowlec.

What happened
and what we did.
- The site
- High care and ambient lines, running around the clock
- Where it started
- Unlabelled bins, stock in personal toolboxes, no reliable count
- What was at stake
- Stoppages of a few minutes running into hours
The challenge
The site ran around the clock across high care and ambient lines, but its engineering stores had grown without a system. Fasteners, seals, food grade lubricants and gloves sat in unlabelled bins, in toolboxes and in personal drawers. Engineers were leaving the floor to hunt for a part, then raising an urgent order for something the site already held. Stock had not been counted properly in years, obsolete items filled the shelves, and nobody could say with confidence what was on hand. Stoppages that should have lasted minutes were running into hours.
Our approach
Rowlec started with a full inventory audit and stock rationalisation, stripping out obsolete lines and consolidating duplicate parts down to a single standardised range. The stores was rebuilt with bespoke racking, barcode labelling and clear min and max levels set against real usage rather than habit. Engineering consumable stations were placed at the point of use on the packing hall and the wet side, so gloves, cable ties and cleaning chemicals no longer needed a walk to the stores. A Rowlec account manager now visits on a fixed schedule to scan, replenish and review.
The outcome
Engineers stopped searching and started fixing. The maintenance team reported that the parts they reach for are on the shelf, in the right place, every shift, and that emergency orders for everyday items have effectively stopped. Rationalising duplicate lines released space and freed working capital that had been sitting on the shelves. Because usage is now visible, the site can see which consumables are being pulled by which line, which has opened useful conversations about wear rates on the filler seals. Purchasing handles one consolidated order rather than a stream of small urgent ones.
My engineers used to spend the first hour of every shift looking for parts. Now they walk to the stores and it is simply there.

Automotive
Critical spares on the shelf before they fail
A tier one automotive supplier could not risk a press line waiting months for a long-lead-time drive. Rowlec now holds the critical spares, called off against an agreed stock profile.
Plastics & Packaging
Bins refilled before anyone has to ask
A plastics processor was raising a constant stream of low value purchase orders for consumables. Vendor managed inventory moved replenishment to Rowlec and gave procurement its week back.
